Cyber Monday!

If you’re not shopped out from Black Friday and today, I’ve put together a list of items that we love (and have been eyeing) that are on sale today!

Never Touch Book Series

Mia LOVES books. She thoroughly enjoys the one-on-one engagement she gets from you while reading, and especially, loves being able to turn the pages. With Mia’s CVI (cortical visual impairment), she often does not focus on the page that is being read.

One of our favorite book series, “Never Touch” featuring themed rhyming stories, warning children of the dangers of touching (Monsters, Dinosaurs, Tigers, etc.), but in a silly and fun way. Each book features raised silicone in bright colors and different textures, making it easier for Mia to see, and get a touch and feel experience, furthering her engagement with the book.

You can grab Never Touch a Shark from Amazon for just $9.41.

Mia is still in a crib, however I will be transitioning her to a railed montesori bed at some time. This will mean she will need new bedding, and it is important to me to find ways to foster Mia’s developmental growth and independence. I’ve found a company that will make that a breeze for those with functional challenges. Beddy’s offers bedding in sizes twin, full, queen, and king. The entire bedding fits like a fitted sheet, in one piece, helping the bedding to stay in place, and offers ease of use. The inside of the Beddy is feels like a sheet, while the top portion is padded like a comforter. The two come together with a zipper, that can be zipped up, or unzipped, but, feels much more comfortable than a sleeping bag. For someone who has limited motor ability, Beddy’s is a nice alternative that allows for neat and comfortable bedding with just one zip.

Beddy’s is offering 25% off and free shipping with code CYBER21

Now that Mia is in larger sizes, all swimsuits aren’t created equal. Some of her 5T swimwear that we use for aquatic therapy no longer has the snaps closer between the legs. Once she is out of the water, it is extremely hard to remove a wet swimsuit, especially due to her left sided hemiparesis. I’ve come across an accessible swimwear line that I can not wait to try! Wowease offers accessible swimwear for women sizes 12M though Women’s 16. Wowease features magnetic bottom closure, along with hidden magnets on the back that allow for easier changes.

Simply put, Mia wears AFOs (ankle-foot orthoses) to ensure that her ankle and foot are aligned in a neutral position while walking or standing. The AFOs help support and control the position of her ankles, help her left side as her muscles in her left leg are more contract, and just provide overall stability that she would not have without them. Since she cannot stand or walk without her AFOs, special shoes are necessary to fit over them. Billy Footwear is my favorite adaptive shoe we have come across so far. Mixing fashion with functionality, Billy Footwear offers a Fliptop, that is opened and closed with a zipper atop the shoe, making it incredibly easy to take on and off. They offer, toddler, child, and adult sizes and an large range of style and height.

Although Mia uses a wheelchair in public, I still carry her a decent amount of time around the house, as well as, in and out the car. I would find myself struggling to put my boots on, or having to sit Mia in her highchair, or have someone hold her for me while I get my shoes on. My grandmother saw this, and bought me a pair of Kizik’s. I had never heard of the brand before, but I am so thankful she did. Kizik’s are a hands free, stylish shoe. All you have to do is, place your foot in the shoe, and the HandsFree Labs technology goes to work, allowing the back of the shoe to collapse, and pop right back up, without loosing it’s shape. I am now able to hold Mia, slip on my shoes, and we are out of the house in no time. Not only are these perfect for parents, but also especially perfect for those in need of an adaptive shoe.

Kizik is offering 15% off when you sign up for their newsletter, a free pair of socks with purchase, as well as referral program that allows you to gift someone a $20 coupon, and in turn, you receive a $20 off reward once they purchase a pair.

Last January, Mia mastered the art of drinking through a straw. I’ve gone through countless of sippy cups, but the Munchkin Any Angle Weighted Straw Cup is by far my favorite. It was important for me to find a cup that had soft straw, handles, and was lightweight. We get all of this and more from this cup. The cup has a weighted straw feature which allows for Mia to have access to her drink, regardless of how she is holding the cup. This features has been phenomenal. With other straw cups, Mia is not as successful at finishing all the contents as the straw is stationary, or is unable suck any, if she is tilting in back. She moves her head so much, and this allows for her to drink, no matter the angle. This cup helps give Mia the independence she desires. The only draw back, is that she will chew the straw when I am not paying attention-but that’s no fault to the design.

I hope you find these finds helpful, rather you are in search of some adaptive items, or if someone you know is searching.
